Still, the combat keeps things interesting and some of the later boss fights are visually spectacular. The game abandons the cliché koi ponds and cherry blossoms setting for an even-more cliché string of industrial warehouses, and it's all pretty rote. As far as the game itself, the middle third of the story drags a lot. Yeah, okay, this is the kind of Ralph Macchio-related humor I can get behind. It's the type of dumb action fun that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be proud of, and I really enjoyed it despite acknowledging that parts of it are still incredibly problematic. You might say it has the touch you might even say it has the power. It still manages to be an excellent experience nonetheless, but that lack of imagination in a key point means Shadow Warrior is just regular old good. But even with all that going for it, Shadow Warrior doesn’t achieve the sort of old-school remake perfection that we saw a couple months ago with Rise of the Triad simply because the gamplay is mostly fighting, and most of the fighting is the same from one battle to the next. The writing is amusing, the actors kill the lines they’re given, the world is just brilliant to gaze at and I cannot overstate how great it is to wild a melee weapon that does more visible damage to organic tissue than a wiffle ball bat does.

What actually occurs outside that scope isn’t a huge deal, but that pretense is necessary just for the sake of providing a reason for doing what you’re doing. This isn’t really a game about story, though it’s about cutting bad guys up, enjoying the view and listening to the jokes. You can pick this one up on Steam as of today, and if the prospect of a demon-fueled asian-themed adrenaline rush sounds like a recipe for fun to you, then set aside a few gigs of hard drive space and get ready to get your sword-and-gun-fu on. It’s hours of mindless, bloody, expletive-filled fun in an action-packed fantasy world illustrated with gorgeous graphics, a good variety of unlocks, and enough challenges to make completionists feel as if they got their money’s worth.
Ultimately, Shadow Warrior delivers on exactly what it set out to do: providing a reboot to a fun but long-gone title, and in the process presenting a game that’s tremendously fun even for people totally unfamiliar with the original it’s based on. When there are this many demons to kill and so many ways to kill them, it’s better to move fast and to carry a big sword. Wang’s movement seemed erratic to me at first, too fast and slippery, but I soon realised that I had it all wrong.
